FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On October 29, 2011 the El Toro Surf Team competed in Huntington Beach through the Scholastic Surf Series (www.surfsss.org) and placed 4th overall in a competition against St. Margaret’s, Long Beach Wilson and Santa Margarita High Schools. The competition format opened with El Toro facing Long Beach Wilson then all surfers from the earlier rounds facing off against all 4 high schools. The competitors surfed in ideal weather with 3-4 foot waves. The team shined in certain categories with individuals taking impressive spots in the men’s short board and women’s long board competitions.

Surfing for the men, Andrew McKellips, Nik Frey and Marco Mendoza all made it into eh semi-final heats. Marco Mendoza took top rankings with 5th place out of 32 surfers in men’s short board. Surfing for the women, Ashley Quintilone, Jacqueline Stockton and Brooke Powers all competed in the short and long board divisions. Following Mendoza’s 5th place spot was Jaqueline Stockton also placing 5th in the women’s long board competition and Matthew Stockton placing 5th in the bodyboard division.

On November 19, 2011, the El Toro Surf Team competed in Oceanside and placed 4th again against stiff competition, this time leading off against St. Margaret’s and continuing into the semifinal rounds with advancing surfers from Long Beach Wilson and Santa Margarita. All 5 El Toro Surfers placed in the finals with newcomer Jade Leilani Shearen taking a 5th in women’s longboard, Jacqueline Stockton taking a 6th in women’s shortboard and 4th in women’s bodyboard. The men lead off with a 2nd place finish by Andrew McKellips in Men’s Longboard and a 3rd place finish by Brandon Lockhart in Men’s shortboard. Showing his versatility, Marco Mendoza finished a strong 5th in both longboard and shortboard.

El Toro is a talented team with an exciting season ahead of them. The next team competition will be held south of the Oceanside Pier on Saturday, February 25, 2012.
